Listening & Understanding Client's Map
Therapy is a space of mutual competence and respect between the therapist and the client– the client is the best source for their problems; the therapists posses the skills for holding the integrity of the client’s reality. But this comes from listening. It is the therapist’s ability to listen to the client and understand their world map from their own lens. But listening alone is not enough; listening in silence is what can bring to light the client’s territory.
Impact of the Impact
The event is in the past. The dimension where it exists now is in the client’s memory and in their augmentation. But it exists not because of the event itself, but because of the impact of the event which the client has stored in their imagination.
As therapists, what one needs to be work with is the impact and understand the psychic spilt between the latent and the explicit part. Exploring the narrative the client is telling themselves, the impact of the impact, can help elicit why it is still affecting them.
Intervention & Eliciting the Client's Truth
The intervention process begins when the client and the therapist enter the space of therapy. It becomes crucial to understand what the client intends to achieve from the session. Eliciting what it is that the client wants, and simply not what they struggle with, is key to client intervention and facilitation.
It is the therapist’s ability to reach beyond the ecological clash to check the congruence, alignment and clarity.
The Process of Elicitation
The process of elicitation facilitates understanding the impact of the impact. What is it that is not available to the client as a result of the impact? Do they believe they have no choice but to react? Are they compelled to travel the past because of the hidden triggers?
It’s only when the impact of the impact is understood that the ecology can be restored.
