Supervision and
Observation

26th to 30th July, 2025

Bangalore

I have had the opportunity to learn in close quarters with Fr. Richard (Dick) McHugh. He was one of models for brutal honesty, brevity and sponsorship. I remember Judy once said, and I quote “he (Dick) had the gift of sponsorship. Judith Delozier (or what we all fondly call Judy), she was Dick’s teacher and my giant from whom I continue to learn. She is an institution in herself, I model her for presence, empathy and setting assertive boundaries. In this journey of learning neurolinguistics and Gestalt psychotherapy, I have had the opportunity and sponsorship of learning from many such giants including Robert Dilts and John Grinder too.

Learning from different teachers is accessing different styles of working and learning multiple representations and descriptions. To learn, practice and be supervised by counsellors at Snehalaya Counselling Center was one of the finest experience as it all came together under the leadership and guidance of Fr. Cajeten Menezes. Supervision and self care are two grounding participations that I have experienced on this journey of mine. No matter how much we all practice or put ourself out there, as life happens and contexts change, it is our access to our mentors, supervisors and the practices of self care that anchors us and keeps us from spiraling down.

"This course is an intense practice group with activities and exercises which aim to generate new pathways and new neuro-synaptic connections so that we are empowered with the choice to take our illness and convert it into wellness."

Objectives of Supervision and Self-Care Routines

For experienced counselors and therapists, the following objectives are pivotal in integrating supervision and self-care into their professional regimen:

  • Enhance Clinical Competence: Refine therapeutic skills through reflective supervisory practices.

  • Maintain Ethical Standards: Ensure adherence to ethical guidelines via regular supervisory oversight.

  • Foster Professional Growth: Encourage continuous learning and development through supervisory feedback.

  • Prevent Professional Burnout: Implement self-care strategies to manage stress and sustain enthusiasm.

  • Promote Self-Awareness: Cultivate introspection to understand personal biases and their impact on therapy.

  • Ensure Client Welfare: Maintain therapist well-being to provide the highest standard of care to clients.

In conclusion, regardless of one's therapeutic approach or years of experience, the integration of supervision and self-care remains a vital component of effective and ethical practice. By committing to these practices, therapists not only enhance their professional longevity but also uphold their responsibility to deliver the best possible care to their clients.
